Examination Preparation

Upper GI Series, Barium Swallow, Small Bowel Follow Through:

  • Nothing to eat or drink after midnight (this includes water and chewing gum)
  • If you are a smoker, please try to refrain from smoking.
  • During the exam you will be asked to drink barium, this is the contrast medium for the exam. 

Mammography:

Please refrain from using deodorant or powder under your arms. If your exam is later in the day, wipes will be provided to remove any deodorant or powder.

MRI:

MRCP (Magnetic Resonance Cholangiopancreatography)—Appointments scheduled preferably in the morning. Please avoid any fatty food for 24 hours prior to your exam. Please do not eat or drink anything 6 hours prior to the exam. 

Ultrasound:

  • Abdomen—Nothing to eat or drink after midnight the night before the exam.
  • Bladder, Pelvic, Early OB/GYN—These examinations require a full bladder, please drink 32 ounces of clear liquid. Please do not urinate until exam is complete.
  • Renal—Nothing to eat after midnight the night before, please arrive for your exam well hydrated. Start drinking 2 hours prior to exam and all OB patients should have full bladder.

  • Pylorus—Please bring a baby bottle filled with sterile water and a pacifier if your baby is used to using one. If possible, nothing to eat 1 to 2 hours prior to the exam.
  • Renal Artery Stenosis—Nothing to eat after midnight prior, arrive well hydrated

Abdominal And Pelvic CT:

  • Nothing to eat or drink for 4 hours prior to exam. 
  • Depending on the type of CT your doctor has ordered, you may be required to drink 32 ounces of oral contrast mixed with lemonade upon your arrival. You will be taken back for your exam approximately one hour from the time you begin to drink.
